Daly River Bakery Training Program
Click to enlarge In early April, a remote bakery training program was delivered at the
Indigenous Catholic Mission called Nauiyu which is situated 250km South
West of Darwin in a remote settlement outside town.
The training was
delivered by Charles Darwin University and bakery lecturer David Baker
over a period of five weeks, with Kerry Pinnacle supporting the program
by supplying the bakery ingredients.
The focus of the course was to
deliver basic skills in baking and finishing of products such as
scones, fruit loaves, cakes and breads, which could then be utilised in
local food stores and school canteens.
The course had twelve indigenous
students from the area who have a variety of roles within the community
including working in school canteens.
Robert says "the popularity of
the course has been so successful that we now have bookings in Jabiru,
Bulman and Katherine this year and next."
We would like to thank Darwin
University for giving Kerry Pinnacle the opportunity to support the
training program, and taking baking into remote Indigenous communities
as bread and baked goods are a major factor of living in the bush.
