Kytons Bakery celebrates 70 years and the best lamingtons in the country
2008 is turning out to be quite a year for Adelaide's Kytons Bakery!
Not only is the successful Adelaide bakery celebrating its 70th
Birthday this year, but Kytons has also just been awarded first prize
at the National Baking Competition for its lamingtons.
Kytons have been loyal Pinnacle customers for 70 years and began
trading in 1938, selling everything from bar cake, cream buns and the
most popular of its lines, the lamington log – a madeira based
lamington cake, topped with cream and cherries.
Overtime, the business took a turn in direction. Kytons had developed a
"Lamington Kit" for schools and community groups. This consisted of
sponge, coconut & chocolate dip ingredients, wires, bowls, knives,
and measuring sticks.
With the success of his local schools Lamington Drives, Kytons left its
stall in the market for over 10 years, concentrating entirely on
running fundraising Lamington Drives.
Today, lamingtons are still the product that Kytons is best known for
in Adelaide. The business has also expanded into other fundraising
drives – hot cross buns, winter pies and a festive Christmas drive.
Current owners, Darren and Sharon Sutton are also developing their
lamington market beyond the school fundraising drive, now supplying
6-packs of the award winning lamingtons to independent supermarkets and
gourmet stores, and also supplying the food services market.
